Detailed Biographical Info
Abiola Ayopo BABAJIDE, PhD, is a Professor of Finance and the current Dean of the College of Management and Social Science, Covenant University, Ota. She had her formal education in Lagos State. Her tertiary education began at the Lagos State University, Ojo, where she earned her first degree in Economics. She proceeded to Bayero University, Kano and later at Covenant University, Ota, for her Masters’ degree in Banking and Finance and Doctorate degrees in Finance, respectively. Professor Babajide began her work life in the oil industry as an admin assistant on national service and subsequently as an account trainee, account analyst and later, a Sales Analyst at Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc, Apapa, Lagos. She started her academic career at Covenant University as Assistant Lecturer in 2002 and rose through the rank to become a Professor of Finance in 2021. She was the second substantive Head of the Department of Banking and Finance from 2012 to 2014.
Bringing her professional industry experience to the table, she served as the MD/CEO of the Covenant Microfinance Bank between 2016 – 2017 and the Managing Director/Business Manager of the Strategic Business Unit, the IGR arm of the University, between 2015 and 2016. She was also a member of the Board of Directors, Covenant Microfinance Bank (2014 -2018); Chair of the Finance and General-Purpose committee, Covenant Microfinance Bank 2014 – 2016; Chair of Credit Committee, Covenant Microfinance Bank (2016 – 2018); Member, Board of Directors, Strategic Business Unit, Covenant University (2012 – 2014); and Member, Membership Committee, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (2015 – 2016).
At the academic level, Prof. Babajide served in many committees of the University, such as the Chair Convocation Committee (2018), Chair, the College hooding Committee (2013), and Faculty Support Committee (2007 -2011) (2015 – 2017). Resumption Committee (2016 – 2018). She has taken many short courses online in the areas of; Financial Technology Foundations and Overview – Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Financial Technology and the Transformation in Financial Services, Copenhagen Business School, Investment Strategies and Portfolio Analysis, Rice University. Understanding Financial Market, University of Geneva. Global Financial Market and Instrument, Rice University and Coursera Master class: The Art and Science of Teaching Online from Coursera. She is a member of the American Finance Association and a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). Her research interest is the area of Development Finance, Entrepreneurial and Small Business Finance, Microfinance, Stock Market Development and Public Finance.
Professor Babajide’s social interest concerns youth development, social justice, sustainability, small business development and financial education. She loves reading, cooking, home renovation and gardening. She is married with children.
